Back Cover:
At 16, I was arrested for murder.
The interrogation was straight out of television:
Cops: “Talk to us, your friends and sister already told us everything.”
(usually, a lie to pit friends against each other)
Cops: “We’re not here to talk about what you did – rather, why?”
(to trick you into no longer defending yourself)
Cops: “We will help you if you help us.”
(help me right into a prison cell, maybe.)
In a failed attempt to connect, the Detective asked,
‘Do you want to “do” a doobie?’
Yes, I thought. I did want to “do” a doobie. Badly.
But alas, instead of a doobie, he only had 11 hours of questions that I wouldn’t answer. Neither one of us got our fix that day.
This was my introduction into the justice system, which turns out, is a funny system. Not ha-ha funny, more like stinky cheese funny.
Fast forward 23 years: I did my time. I went to law school. I passed the bar exams. Yet, the Law Society of Ontario (LSO) is stalling with licensing and using my case to set a precedent to expose anyone with a sealed youth record when they apply to become a lawyer.
LSO is wrong. Youth deserve – and have laws mandating them to – have a real second chance.
After living in the shadows for decades while others wrote a book about my life, then a movie, play, dozens of news articles, and countless online clips, I am tired of hiding.
I am a helper, and by sharing my story, I hope to help fix this system.
